Why Crystal River is the Best Place in Florida to Swim with Manatees
Located about 70 minutes north of Tampa on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Crystal River is famous for its clear, spring-fed waters and the winter influx of gentle manatees. Each winter around 800 to 1,000 manatees migrate to Crystal River, seeking warmth in its spring-fed waters which maintain a constant temperature of about 72°F (22°C). The Three Sisters Springs within the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is especially popular with manatees, creating one of the largest gatherings of manatees in the world.

If You've Been Wanting to Swim with Manatees, Here are Some Tips!
Manatees are federally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1973 and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978. Touching a manatee is a federal offense. Follow these tips to be sure you are recreating responsibly.
General Rules for Swimming with Manatees
- Practice Passive Observation: Avoid chasing, touching, poking, or otherwise disturbing resting manatees. Instead, let them approach you if they’re curious (and they are typically very curious).
- Avoid Splashing and Move Slowly: Manatees are sensitive to loud noises, so try to keep movements calm and quiet.
- No Diving Allowed: Diving down from a kayak or paddleboard is prohibited in designated manatee areas to prevent startling the animals.
- No Feeding the Manatees: As with all wildlife, do not feed the manatees.
- Don’t Separate a Group: Do not separate a cow and her calf, or isolate an individual manatee from its group.
The Best Time of the Year to Swim with Manatees
The influx of manatees to the area between November and March makes Crystal River a prime winter destination for manatee viewing. January and February are peak months to see these protected “sea cows” in their natural habitat as they seek shelter in warmer waters. Remember though that what is ‘warm’ to a blubbery manatee can still be cold to humans, so wetsuits this time of year are super helpful.
Where to Swim with Manatees in Crystal River
Three Sisters Springs is the crown jewel of manatee sanctuaries in Crystal River. This clear shallow spring is popular among manatees making it a perfect spot for manatee encounters. You can access Three Sisters Springs by launching a kayak or paddleboard from the nearby Kings Bay or Hunter Springs Park launch sites and paddling to the springs. Alternatively, guided tours are offered that often include wetsuit rentals and snorkel gear.
There is no water access to the spring from the refuge; Due to erosion, visitors are not permitted to enter the springs from the refuge.
Seven Sisters Spring located along the Chassahowitzka River is a hidden gem for manatee sightings. Unlike Three Sisters, Seven Sisters Spring is part of a more secluded and wild environment, giving it an off-the-beaten-path charm. The spring is a series of small, interconnected springs that form scenic turquoise-blue pools and gentle currents along the river, which is known for its pristine, natural beauty. Seven Sisters can be accessed easily from the Chassahowitzka Marina and boat launch.
We’ve kayaked and paddleboarded around this area many times and each time we have seen dozens of manatees!
The Chassahowitzka River, known for its serene and wild surroundings, also offers a quieter setting for kayakers and paddleboarders who come not only for potential manatee encounters but also for the relaxing and scenic paddling experience. From the Chassahowitzka River Campground you can launch your kayak and head upriver to spot manatees in their natural habitats. There are several coves to spot the gentle giants and quietly enjoy their company.
Helpful Items to Pack When Swimming with Manatees
A pair of sturdy water shoes is a must, as the river banks are covered with pebbles and rocks. As always, we recommend a high-quality sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat, and long-sleeved UPF shirts to protect your skin.
You can pack all of your essentials in a dry bag and bring it along with you, or leave everything in the car and just bring a small waterproof phone and keys case. Don’t forget to save the memories with a waterproof camera like a Go-Pro!
Are There Manatees in Crystal River Year-Round?
Absolutely. While official manatee season is November to March, manatees are often spotted up and down the Florida coastline. The population sizes may be smaller in Crystal River in the summer but the warmer weather makes swimming and participating in water sports much more tolerable!
Where to Stay in Crystal River
The best place to stay if you want to swim with manatees in Crystal River is at one of the campgrounds right on the water. Seven Sisters Campground offers waterfront RV sites where you can launch your board right from your site.
